Cornerstone sponsors events and activities especially for international students and scholars. We enjoy meeting students from other countries and helping them make the adjustment to life in Kansas City.
Join us for volleyball and a picnic in Loose Park on Sunday, August 26, at 4:30 p.m. Internationals (and Americans) will have a chance to make new friends, play volleyball and enjoy a picnic supper. The picnic will be at the north end of Loose Park, near 51st and Wornall, on the grass field around the children’s playground.
Second Saturdays take place on the second Saturday of each month. A mixed group of Americans and internationals meet in an American home to enjoy a meal together, have fun with an ice-breaker or game, and engage in an informal discussion relating to the Bible. New people are always welcome, and you do not need to be a Christian to participate. These gatherings are a great place to learn about American culture, practice conversational English, and meet friends from different parts of the world. This semester’s meeting dates are September 8, October 13, November 10 and December 15.
English Corner is a gathering for international students to improve their English through discussion and conversation in a casual setting. It is a great place to practice English without homework and tests! We meet every Monday at UMKC campus when classes are in session.
Our costume party and square dance on Saturday, October 27, at 6 p.m., offers internationals the chance to experience a part of American folk culture. Don’t know how to square dance? We’ll teach you how! We’ll have prizes for best costumes.
A monthly oriental grocery trip (one Saturday per month) provides round-trip transportation from pickup points near UMKC to an Asian-specialty grocery store. This is your chance to stock up on food items you love but can’t find at a typical American grocery store.
