Hungry and Happy

Summary: Those who are desperate to receive the perfect righteousness of Christ instead of depending on their own efforts will have their soul’s hunger satisfied by God’s complete acceptance and approval.

What is righteousness?
Our reason for being, how we justify our existence, what makes living worthwhile

  • Social righteousness — doing what it takes to please others; whose approval must you have to know that life’s worth living?
  • Theological righteousness — doing what it takes to please God; living the kind of life God finds acceptable

Why is it good to be starving?

  • The problem of counterfeit righteousness
  • The comprehensive righteousness of Christ

How are the hungry satisfied?

  • Jesus’ double righteousness — all we need
  • Your righteousness resume — What successes are you proudest of? What do you get most defensive about?
  • Staying hungry, experiencing his fullness

Isaiah 55:1-2

“Come, everyone who thirsts,
come to the waters;
and he who has no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without price.
Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
and delight yourselves in rich food.”
